Quick answer
To rank in local search, complete and actively update your Google Business Profile, earn a steady flow of recent reviews, keep your name, address and phone number identical across the web, build genuinely useful service and location pages, fix mobile speed and technical basics, and earn local links and mentions. Then track calls and enquiries, not just rankings.
If you are a plumber, dentist, law firm, clinic, contractor or any business that serves customers in a specific area, local SEO is likely your best-value marketing channel. When someone searches “roofer near me” or “family dentist in Brampton”, Google shows a map with three businesses, the “map pack”, before any regular results. This checklist covers everything we review when we take on a local SEO client, in the order we usually tackle it.
Why reviews and local visibility matter more than ever
All three figures come from BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey. The same survey found that 45% of consumers now use AI tools such as ChatGPT for local recommendations, so the signals that win the map pack increasingly decide whether AI assistants recommend you too.
1. Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the single most important local SEO asset you have. Complete every section.
- Claim and verify the profile with the exact business name you use everywhere else. Do not add keywords to the name.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary categories.
- Add your services with short descriptions, your service areas and accurate opening hours, including holidays.
- Upload real photos of your team, premises, vehicles and work, and keep adding new ones every month.
- Write a clear business description that says what you do, where and for whom.
- Publish posts about offers, news and recent projects at least a few times a month.
- Add common questions and answers, and turn on messaging if you can respond quickly.
2. Reviews
- Ask every happy customer for a review, ideally within a day or two of the job. A short link or QR code makes it easy.
- Aim for a steady flow of new reviews every month rather than a one-off push. Recency matters.
- Reply to every review, positive and negative, politely and within a few days.
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones. It breaks Google’s policies and can get reviews removed or your profile suspended.
- Collect reviews on the platforms that matter in your industry too, such as Yelp, Facebook, Trustpilot or specialist directories.
3. NAP consistency and citations
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Google and AI tools cross-check these details across the web; inconsistencies reduce their confidence in your business.
- Use exactly the same business name, address, phone number and website on every listing.
- List your business on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, Yelp and the main directories in your country.
- Add industry-specific directories, for example legal, medical or home services directories.
- Find and fix old listings with outdated addresses or phone numbers.
4. Your website’s local pages
- Create a dedicated page for each main service, and for each city or area you serve if you serve several.
- Make each location page genuinely useful: local projects, local reviews, areas covered, directions and photos. Avoid copy-and-paste pages with only the city name changed.
- Put your phone number and a clear call to action at the top of every page, especially on mobile.
- Embed a Google Map and show your address and hours on your contact page.
- Add LocalBusiness schema markup with your name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates and service area.
5. Technical basics
- Make sure your site loads quickly on mobile phones; most local searches happen on them.
- Use HTTPS and fix broken links and missing pages.
- Give every page a unique title and meta description that includes the service and location.
- Connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4, and track calls and form submissions as conversions.
6. Local links and mentions
- Join your local chamber of commerce and relevant trade associations.
- Sponsor local events, sports teams or charities that list their sponsors.
- Partner with complementary local businesses and link to each other where it helps customers.
- Share expert comments with local news sites and community blogs.
Common local SEO mistakes to avoid
- Keyword-stuffing your business name. “Smith Plumbing Best Plumber Toronto 24/7” breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
- Using a virtual office or PO box as your address. Google requires a real location where you meet customers, or a hidden address with a service area.
- Creating duplicate profiles. Two profiles for one location split your reviews and confuse Google.
- Ignoring negative reviews. A calm, helpful reply shows future customers how you treat people.
- Thin, duplicated city pages. Dozens of near-identical pages with only the city swapped rarely rank and can drag down the rest of the site.
- Letting the profile go quiet. Profiles with fresh photos, posts and reviews tend to perform better than ones that have not changed in a year.
Local SEO for businesses that serve customers in several countries
If you serve clients in more than one country, as many of our clients in the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia do, use a Google Business Profile only where you have a real, staffed location. For other markets, rely on country or region service pages, local language and spelling, prices in the local currency where possible, and listings on directories that customers in each market actually use.
7. Track what matters
Local SEO success is measured in calls, direction requests, bookings and enquiries, not just rankings. Review your Google Business Profile performance report monthly, track calls and forms on your website, and check your map pack position for your main services from different parts of your service area.
How long does it take? Profile and website improvements can lift visibility within a few weeks. Building reviews, citations and local authority usually takes three to six months to show its full effect, and keeps paying off after that.
